“What does it mean to begin?”
The journey of life carries some of the harshest realities we will ever encounter, yet within its uncertainty lies the beauty of becoming. Every beginning is an invitation into the unknown - a quiet surrender to experiences we cannot predict and lessons we cannot yet understand.
Failure will test the weight of our spirit, and hardship will often arrive without warning. But for those who endure, persevere, and continue walking despite the weight they carry, life has a way of turning scars into wisdom and setbacks into strength.
To begin is to accept the unexpected - to step into the unknown knowing that the road ahead may break you, shape you, and ultimately reveal who you were always becoming.

Mxchael Blue is certainly no stranger to inviting listeners into the depths of his thoughts, constantly wrestling with his experiences while allowing himself to remain vulnerable before his audience. This debut sophomore album continued that formula, taking the rawness of his emotions and pushing his deeply personal sound to a new level within R&B.
There was an intimacy to the project that felt almost confessional, as though each song offered another glimpse into the moments, memories, and emotions that have shaped him. Rather than shying away from vulnerability, Blue embraced it, turning his experiences into something both deeply personal and universally relatable.
“BEGIN” took listeners on an emotional rollercoaster through the many layers of Blue’s experience. Opening with “BEGIN INTRO” the project began with what felt like a quiet pep talk between Blue and himself - a moment of reflection before stepping into the unknown.
There was a warmth to the introduction, almost as though Blue was reassuring himself that he is ready. Having found his way back to himself, he prepares to ascend into a new chapter, accepting that the journey ahead may be uncertain, but choosing to move forward nonetheless. It felt less like an introduction and more like a final breath before beginning again.
As the project unfolded, we we’re drawn deeper into Blue’s experiences of finding himself in love, only to find himself hurt time and time again. There was a sobering realization that ran throughout the project: sometimes, life only gets harder, and finding your footing doesn’t necessarily mean you’re prepared for what comes next. Through love, heartbreak, and the weight of lived experiences, Blue continued to navigate the complexities of finding himself in a world that rarely makes it easy.
Tracks like “IN THIS LIFE”, “RUINED”, “STILL THAT SAME BROER”, and “BOSS” stood out as exceptional attempts at conveying his sombre narrative, capturing the emotional weight of his experiences through both his songwriting and the sheer beauty of the production. There’s something captivating about the way these records sounded, drawing listeners into Blue’s world while allowing the vulnerability of his story to speak for itself.
The production and beat selection on this release were equally remarkable, serving as the emotional backbone of Blue’s storytelling. His choice of collaborators felt nothing short of inspired, bringing together an impressive roster of talent, including LUNGĒLWA, Frank Apollo, Togu, Soggy Rose, oluh, WUN.EYE, and WAVEE. Each instrumental carried its own emotional weight, complementing Blue’s approach to R&B while adding further depth to the experiences he unpacked throughout the project.
“People tend to say that love makes you stronger…I kinda disagree with that. I feel like it’s heartbreak that makes you stronger.”
What made the production so captivating is how naturally it intertwined with Blue’s sound, allowing every melody, rhythm, and sonic texture to reinforce the vulnerability at the heart of his music. Beyond complementing the artist himself, the project also stood as a testament to the immense creative talent flourishing within South Africa’s music scene, reminding us of the gifted minds working behind the scenes to shape the country’s evolving R&B landscape.
The featured guests on this offering were equally exceptional, each bringing something special to the table. The likes of Reneilwe, Impul$e, Earldridge, Boipelo, NanguEnvy, and Remo all played vital roles in adding another layer of magic to the project, showcasing their vocal abilities in their own distinct ways. Rather than simply complementing Blue’s sound, each feature added its own flavour to the experience, enriching the emotional depth of the album while allowing the individuality of each artist to shine through.
Mxchael Blue seems to have found himself in a beautiful creative space, surrounded by a collective of equally gifted individuals who understand the power of collaboration. There’s something special about hearing such distinct voices come together so seamlessly, and this project served as a reminder of just how much magic can happen when talented minds find themselves on the same wavelength.
This was a sublime effort from Blue, continuing to stretch the boundaries of his sound while reminding us why Africa’s R&B landscape remains a space worth cherishing, nurturing, and celebrating.
Through its raw vulnerability, captivating production, and thoughtful collaborations, “BEGIN” stands as a testament to the beauty of an artist willing to explore the depths of his experiences and translate them into something deeply resonant. It’s a reminder that, even amid the uncertainties and hardships of life, there is beauty to be found in beginning again.
A heartfelt congratulations to Mxchael Blue and everyone who contributed to bringing this stunning body of work to life. Here’s to the continued growth of an artist unafraid to bare his soul, and to the flourishing of South African R&B as a genre that deserves to be heard, appreciated, and celebrated for years to come.
