The VERVE Roundup Vol. 9

Winter has finally arrived, and there's no better way to escape the cold than with music capable of warming the soul. Throughout May, June, and July, South Africa's independent music scene delivered an incredible wave of releases, once again proving just how rich and diverse the country's creative landscape truly is.

This edition of the VERVE Roundup found us spending more time with soulful and jazz-inspired records, a refreshing change of pace that made these past three months especially rewarding. At the same time, artists across Hip Hop, alternative, electronic, R&B, and countless other genres continued to raise the bar with standout projects that deserve to be heard.

We had an incredible time discovering these releases, and we hope this list encourages you to dive into the sounds we've been loving. To make things even easier, our VERVE Roundup playlist is still live, featuring every artist included in this edition.

Alex Biaya x Namakau Star - Do 4 Love (29 May 2026)

This was a beautiful release from the Capetonian vocalist that had me completely entranced. What I enjoyed most about this heartfelt track was the back-and-forth exchange between Alex Biaya and Namakau Star, which gave the song an engaging sense of tension and personality. Their conversational performances brought their contrasting thoughts and emotions to life, making every moment feel genuine and adding another layer of depth to an already groovy, captivating tune.

Apexdontplay x N.K.V.Y - My Bad (28 May 2026)

N.K.V.Y has firmly established himself as one of the country's finest producers, so seeing him join forces with the exciting, fast-rising Apexdontplay was a collaboration worth paying attention to. The project's smooth, soulful production provided the perfect backdrop for Apexdontplay to explore a more vulnerable side of his artistry, delivering stunning performances over lush instrumentals. A standout moment came on "Aaliyah's Song," where Stanley Branson's feature added another layer of warmth and emotion to an already beautiful record.

April Yung - I AM KHALTSHA (12 June 2026)

Making a bold statement in the Hip Hop scene, April Yung's latest project is a reminder of why more people should be paying attention to his rise. The Xhosa phenom delivers an exhilarating performance from start to finish, showcasing his impressive lyrical ability over some of the most exciting trap production I've heard in recent months. It's a fearless, high-energy release that highlights both his confidence and potential, and if this project is anything to go by, April Yung is an artist with a very bright future ahead.

banzai - Domestic Treasure (31 May 2026)

One of Botswana's finest, Banzai once again proved why he's such a captivating artist with this effortlessly groovy release. His smooth, charismatic performance immediately caught my attention, but it was his delivery on the chorus that truly stole the show. His vocals floated beautifully over the gentle instrumentation, creating a heavenly atmosphere that left me completely immersed in the song. This was a stunning release from a genuinely gifted musician who continues to showcase his artistry with remarkable finesse.

Ben September - 7 Girls (22 May 2026)

I'd been playing "Anxiety" on repeat long before this project dropped, so I couldn't wait to hear the full release - and it certainly didn't disappoint. Standout tracks like "DESIRE" and "ALL I HEAR IS THE TRUTH" (featuring LuvvStacy) highlighted September's versatility, effortlessly shifting between vulnerability and confidence across the project. In an increasingly competitive R&B landscape, this release is a strong reminder of just how dynamic and compelling an artist September continues to be.

BLCK - B-Mix Pt.1 (12 June 2026)

Crafting soothing and serene instrumentals that gently washed over the listener, BLCK showcased his exceptional gift for creating immersive soundscapes. His refined production effortlessly set a calming mood, allowing every element of the music to breathe. The soulful presence of Pumas+Roses on "Uthando Prelude" and LLELLO's stunning vocal performance on "You" elevated the project even further, resulting in a two-track offering that felt intimate, cohesive, and truly special.

Brendon Tayler x Uncle D - LOCKED IN (24 June 2026)

After what felt like forever, Brendon Tayler finally returned to the scene, reminding listeners exactly why he became such a beloved voice in the first place. Teaming up with Uncle D, the duo delivered a motivating anthem centered on the value of staying locked in, trusting the process, and reaping the rewards that come from discipline and hard work. It's a message that resonates far beyond the music. Their confident performances paired perfectly with the hard-hitting Trap production, making for a triumphant return that was well worth the wait.

Casima - If This Isn’t Love (13 May 2026)

We may just have a new R&B princess on our hands. As my first introduction to Casima's music, this project left an immediate impression thanks to her stunning vocal performances and effortless command of melody across its five tracks. From the moment "Phase You Out" opened the project, I knew I was in for something special, and the rest of the release more than lived up to that promise. It's a captivating debut listen that showcases an artist with immense potential and a bright future in South Africa's R&B scene.

C.H.A.D - Only You (13 June 2026)

What a fun record to experience. On this infectious release, the Capetonian sensation wore his heart on his sleeve, delivering a heartfelt ode to a lover with undeniable charm and sincerity. C.H.A.D's performance was effortlessly captivating, gliding over the bouncy instrumental with infectious energy. By the time the chorus rolled around, I found myself singing along at the top of my lungs - a clear testament to just how catchy and memorable this track really was.

Creed oasis x K.KEED x Kane Keid - LADUMA (14 May 2026)

This was a genuinely proud moment to witness. Having interviewed Creed Oasis early in his journey, it's been incredible to watch his growth and see him now collaborating with some of the hottest names in South African Hip Hop. This exhilarating release is a testament to the hunger, determination, and consistency he's shown throughout his rise. Every collaborator brought infectious energy to the track, making it an exciting listen from start to finish. For the VERVE family, this felt like a full-circle moment, and we couldn't be happier to see Creed Oasis continue reaching new heights. Hats off to you, Creed.

D F W N E - In Her Jazz (31 July 2026)

This was an outstanding body of work, performed with the heart and soul that has become synonymous with D F W N E's artistry. Renowned for continually elevating this sound, he once again demonstrated why he remains one of its most compelling voices. Every performance on the project was delivered with sincerity and emotional depth, while the soft, soulful instrumentals, that seemed to blend Gospel and Jazz, provided the perfect foundation for his heartfelt storytelling. The warmth and sentiment woven throughout the record made for a deeply comforting listening experience, with standout moments like "Yimisani Nkhari" and "Mbilu X'khwameni" beautifully capturing the essence of his wonderful artistry.

Dan Gregory x Tojié Cai x uBeyond - Mamba Juice III: Where Oceans Meet (23 July 2026)

Crafting a world filled with warmth and wonder, this talented trio weaved together a truly magical listening experience through their distinct musical sensibilities. Every element felt purposeful, resulting in a Jazzy LoFi project that was as soothing as it was immersive. Lush guitar melodies intertwined with radiant horn arrangements, created a soundscape that transported you to a carefree summer afternoon, basking beneath the warmth of the sun. This was a beautifully cohesive body of work that highlighted the trio's exceptional chemistry and musicianship, proving once again why they are such gifted artists.

Earldridge x Ukhona x Scarface Panda - DARTFROGS (23 May 2026)

This trio had no business creating music this exceptional. I was blown away by how naturally their individual talents came together to produce such a cohesive and memorable project. Though only four tracks long, every song offered something to get lost in, making it impossible not to vibe along from start to finish. Earl and Ukhona delivered captivating vocal performances throughout, while Scarface Panda's production was nothing short of outstanding. His lush, immersive beats shone especially bright on the closing tracks, "Take a Ride" and "Sam Kerr" bringing the project to a remarkable finish.

Faker Streets - Tough (3 July 2026)

Marking their first release of the year following the success of their 2025 album, “Beginnings & Endings”, the Capetonian band returned with a bold statement. Bursting with vibrant energy and purpose, the track was an exhilarating listen from start to finish, showcasing the group's ability to craft music that's both powerful and infectious. The anthemic chorus blended seamlessly with the band's electronic rock sound - a genre I wasn't particularly familiar with beforehand, but one this release made me appreciate all the more.

Fidèlle - The Crestfallen Alchemy (28 July 2026)

What a uniquely captivating listening experience this turned out to be. It's difficult to put into words exactly how this project made me feel, but I know I thoroughly enjoyed disappearing into its strange, eerie, and whimsical sonic world. It sits far outside the music I would normally gravitate towards, yet that's precisely what made it so exciting. Through entrancing performances, adventurous production, and unpredictable instrumentals that constantly shifted and danced around my ears, Fidèlle crafted an immersive soundscape that felt both mysterious and exhilarating. It was the kind of project that invites you to surrender to the unknown - and I had an incredible time doing exactly that.

Frank, The Outcast x Aura - Ngizimisele Ngawe (29 May 2026)

A stunning release from an exceptional virtuoso, Frank's latest single was a heartfelt ballad that found the musician absolutley pouring his heart out. Every element of this track felt smooth, warm, and uplifting, making it impossible not to nod along as the song unfolded. It also served as my first proper introduction to Aura, and I couldn't have asked for a better one. Her soothing, lullaby-like vocals brought a refreshing softness to the record, blending beautifully with the melancholic instrumentation that created an emotionally rich and deeply captivating listening experience.

Freckled - Reasons (3 June 2026)

A brand-new name on VERVE's radar, Freckled arrived as a welcome surprise, and we're incredibly grateful to have discovered her music. This beautifully crafted project was filled with smooth, neo-soul performances that gracefully explored themes of love, longing, and wonder. Standout tracks like "Again" and "Ode (Me to You)" were particularly breathtaking, showcasing not only her heartfelt songwriting but also the remarkable strength and warmth of her voice. If this project is any indication, Freckled is an artist well worth keeping an eye on.

Gino Luka - FarFromHome (3 June 2026)

There's something undeniably infectious about Gino's sound, and it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes it so captivating. Perhaps it's the effortless charisma he brought to every performance - a quality that shone through in every moment of his music. "don't really luv ya!" perfectly encapsulated that appeal, with the underground rapper gliding effortlessly over an intoxicating Trap beat that instantly pulled you in. The rest of the project followed that same winning formula, delivering catchy, confident performances that makes Gino an exciting artist to watch.

GQAMI x Impul$e - seng’sharp (1 May 2026)

“Into The Inferno” is a project I've found myself returning to time and time again, so I was genuinely excited to hear what GQAMI had in store with this latest release. She didn't disappoint. Her vibrant, emotive vocals glided effortlessly over the lush instrumentation as she reflected on finding strength and healing after the end of a relationship. It's a performance that felt both vulnerable and empowering. As for Impul$e, his talent speaks for itself. His contribution elevated the track even further, reminding listeners exactly why he's regarded as one of the most exciting artists in the scene today.

Hannah Ray x Matt Sam - Easy Love (12 June 2026)

A beautiful, uplifting release, this track found Ray embracing the simple joy and adoration that comes with being in love. Her heartfelt vocals blended perfectly with Matt Sam's groovy House production, resulting in a record that was both warm and irresistibly danceable. While this sound differed from what I've come to expect from Hannah's previous work, the change in direction felt refreshing and suited her remarkably well. It's an exciting evolution that highlighted her versatility as an artist.

Hurricane Dan Fischer - 2 PLATE (25 June 2026)

Hurricane Dan Fischer is an artist I've been recommending to anyone willing to listen. There's an undeniable magnetism to his music, and this project was overflowing with the infectious energy that has made him such an exciting name to watch. Across every track, the lyricist commanded dynamic Trap production with confidence, effortlessly injecting his distinctive style and charisma into each performance. Standout moments like "BEAN" (featuring BABA KUSHI and DoxThe_Maverick) along with "HLOMPOZA" perfectly captured the intensity and individuality that defines his sound.

Jade Olivia - 1234 (22 May 2026)

This style or type of genre isn’t something I'd consider myself particularly familiar with, but I had an amazing time experiencing this charming release from the rising singer-songwriter. From Olivia's warm, heartfelt performance to the gentle guitar strumming and subtle drum work, every element came together beautifully to create an intimate, comforting atmosphere. It was a refreshing listen that highlighted the beauty of simplicity, and by the end of the track, I found myself completely won over by its wholesome, folk-inspired sound.

JAY Furré- who we are (15 July 2026)

I found myself constantly returning to Jay's 2025 project, "Remember To Breathe III" so it was exciting to finally hear new music from the rising talent this year - and it certainly didn't disappoint. Overflowing with confidence and charisma, Jay sounded like he was having the time of his life as he shined effortlessly over the track's bubbly, vibrant production. His energy and natural musicality made for an incredibly enjoyable listen, further proving why he's one of the artists I'm most excited to watch. If this release is any indication of what's to come, Jay has an incredibly bright future ahead, and I can't wait to hear how he continues to evolve his sound.

Jiggy Stapes x Earldridge - LeWine Party (3 July 2026)

Johannesburg's decorated drummer and producer, Jiggy Stapes, joined forces with the immensely talented Earldridge for an exquisitely crafted three-track offering that was heavenly from beginning to end. The project's rich, choppy production created a captivating backdrop, gifting Earldridge the perfect canvas to showcase the depth and warmth of his vocal abilities. Among the highlights, "MIA" stood tall as a truly blissful listening experience, beautifully capturing the chemistry between the two artists and leaving a lasting impression.

JUGMAN x Suarie - MFONDIN (19 June 2026)

This was my first time hearing JUGMAN, and I was immediately impressed by the sharpness of his pen and the confidence in his delivery. His immersive flow cut effortlessly through an intoxicating beat driven by booming 808s and eerie synths, creating a dark, captivating atmosphere that perfectly complemented his performance. As for Suarie, his talent has already been well recognised at VERVE, and he once again lived up to the hype. The moment his verse arrived, I was out of my seat, completely locked into his entrancing flow and commanding lyricism. This was a phenomenal collaboration from two exciting rising talents with incredibly bright futures.

Just Jabba - KEY PLAYER (8 May 2026)

One of the things I admired most about this project was the sheer versatility Just Jabba displayed throughout. Rather than confining himself to a single sound, he effortlessly moved between Hip hop, Trap, Afropop, and Kwaito, making each style feel authentic and uniquely his own. That willingness to experiment kept the project engaging from start to finish. The Kwaito-inspired moments were particular highlights, revealing a clear influence on Jabba's artistry. Tracks like "Tonight" and "Kanjani" stood out as vibrant celebrations of that sound, blending nostalgia with a fresh, contemporary approach.

Kaypin - Spirited Away (30 July 2026)

Anything Kaypin releases is an instant listen for me, and this two-track offering only reaffirmed why. Across "Spirited Away" and "Rendezvous" featuring Ukhona, Kaypin effortlessly showcased the musicality and charm that have made him such a compelling artist. Both songs were built around soft, melodic instrumentals that beautifully complemented his smooth, alluring vocals, creating an atmosphere that felt vibrant, calming, and effortlessly smooth. It's a concise yet memorable release that further highlighted Kaypin's ability to craft music that lingered long after the final note.

K Lxnger - BluePrint (16 July 2026)

This release was pure heat from beginning to end. I unexpectedly stumbled across "Good Day" featuring Frankness Everyday and Khaya DoomAKU, and within moments I was completely hooked. Discovering that the track was part of a full project only made the experience even more rewarding, as every song delivered on the same high standard. K Lxnger's production was exceptional throughout, crafting rich, dynamic soundscapes that gave each rapper the perfect canvas to showcase their lyricism and individuality. Every verse landed with confidence, every beat left a lasting impression, and by the time the project came to a close, it had firmly cemented itself as one of my favourite Hip Hop releases of the year. This release was that real Hip Hop shit!

Karriers - Karriers (15 May 2026)

This five-track project from the Capetonian Rock band was an exhilarating listen from start to finish. Every song packed a punch, bursting with raw energy and intensity that never let up. The lead vocalist delivered a captivating performance, commanding every moment with a powerful presence, while the rest of the band matched that energy through explosive instrumentation. Together, they created a thrilling release that showcased the chemistry and passion driving their sound.

Keely Crocker - Things could be different (15 May 2026)

A heartfelt track exploring Crocker's frustrations within a loving relationship, this song beautifully captured the emotional complexity that can come with feeling like an inconvenience to someone you care about. Keely's performance was deeply moving, conveying vulnerability and quiet reflection with remarkable sincerity. Accompanied by sombre piano melodies that gently resonated throughout the track, her vocals painted an intimate portrait of love, doubt, and longing, resulting in a truly beautiful and emotionally affecting listen.

K!NO - B.O.T.I (2 June 2026)

A heartfelt ballad from the talented songbird, this release ound K!NO reflecting on the hopes of being with someone special, to the point where thoughts of them spilled over into her dreams. Her performance was sincere and effortlessly charming, drawing listeners into her world of longing and quiet wonder. I especially loved the bubbly, soulful production, which balanced the song's emotional themes with an uplifting sense of joy. It’s been a while since I'd last heard K!NO's music, and this was a wonderful reminder of her artistry. If this single is anything to go by, I'm excited to see what she has in store next.

Kobi! - Da Vinci (31 July 2026)

Packed with exhilarating rap performances and exceptional production, Kobi! used this release to make one thing abundantly clear - he's taking his craft seriously. From start to finish, the project was filled with hard-hitting tracks that showcased his lyrical ability, commanding delivery, and growing confidence over a collection of outstanding instrumentals. Every beat carried an infectious energy that kept my head nodding throughout, with the explosive opener "Da Vinci" serving as the perfect introduction and setting the tone for the exciting listening experience that followed.

Kwazi M - uBuhle (22 May 2026)

An entertaining six-track release from one of the scene's most exciting prospects, “uBuhle” was an absolute pleasure to experience. Kwazi M delivered a collection of sweet, soulful songs that explored the many emotions of love with grace and charm, allowing her captivating vocals to take centre stage over every smooth instrumental. Standout tracks like "Pull Up" and "Kuphelile" perfectly showcased her ability to command a record with both warmth and confidence. If this project is any indication of what's to come, we may have discovered a true gem, and I'm genuinely excited to watch her journey unfold.

Lelowhatsgood - Rebirth is Necessary (3 July 2026)

Injecting even more fire into the Gqom scene, the talented producer delivered an electrifying release packed with high-octane energy from start to finish. Every track was exhilarating, driven by thunderous rhythms and infectious grooves that made it impossible to stay still. The guest appearances from the likes of Espacio Dios, Joshua Futura, Omagoqa, and more added even greater depth and vibrancy to the project, resulting in a relentless body of work that had me dancing from beginning to end.

Leo Brenin x HENNYBELIT - GEN Z (17 July 2026)

Brenin truly outdid himself with this release, further refining his signature sound alongside the acclaimed production talents of HENNYBELIT. Rich with soul and sincerity, the project was filled with moments of intention and heartfelt emotion, as the Neo-Soul singer reflected on his experiences with remarkable honesty and grace. Every track felt thoughtfully crafted, and tracks like "6AM" and “STUFUZA” stood out as a personal favourite, beautifully capturing everything that makes this project such a stunning listen.

Liamar - B!G U!T $H!T (10 June 2026)

Further cementing his place as Uitenhage's top prospect, Liamar left a lasting impression with this explosive two-pack release. Across both "B!G U!T $H!T" and "All New Everything" the rapper wasted no time showcasing the confidence, charisma, and technical ability that continues to set him apart. The exhilarating, menacing production provided the perfect backdrop for Liamar to flex his sharp lyricism and commanding delivery, resulting in a pair of tracks that felt both relentless and incredibly satisfying.

LIINDOR x Enocs Mae x SundaeBeats - Empilwen Yakho (18 May 2026)

I probably shouldn't have favourites, but this may well be my standout release of recent months. LIINDOR and Enocs crafted an atmosphere that felt nothing short of magical, brought to life by SundaeBeats' breathtaking production. Together, the trio delivered one of the most heavenly love songs I've heard all year. Every element of the record - from the heartfelt performances to the lush, immersive instrumentation felt meticulously crafted, making it clear just how much care and intention went into creating this beautiful piece of music. It's a truly sensational single from start to finish and one that has stayed with me long after the final note.

long story short - daisy (17 July 2026)

Being my first introduction to this group, listening to this riveting track from the Capetonian band was a phenomenal experience. The vocal performance carried an almost sacred quality, beautifully supported by the band's rich and infectious instrumentation. Warm and comforting at its core, the song effortlessly balanced intimacy with explosive energy as soaring guitars roared through the infectious chorus, while the thunderous, melodic drums drove every emotional moment home.

Lungelwa - ABOUT (Stay) (31 May 2026)

A track overflowing with emotion and affection, this release found Lungelwa expressing heartfelt admiration for someone special in her life with sincerity and grace. Her performance was the undeniable centerpiece, delivering each lyric with a powerful sense of conviction that made this song feel both like a personal confession and a bold declaration of love. I was especially impressed by the unexpected switch-up in the latter half of the track, where the tempo gradually lifted, injecting a fresh burst of energy that elevated the emotion and made for a truly memorable listening experience.

Luggage Baby x TJ Zulu x Umntungwambulazi x Jinji - Strapped In? (15 May 2026)

The amount of brilliance poured into this Soul-infused Hip Hop release was nothing short of inspiring. Every artist involved brought something special to the table, seamlessly blending smooth melodies with sharp rap performances to create a track that felt rich, cohesive, and full of life. The chemistry between the collaborators was undeniable, while the laid-back, sophisticated production tied everything together beautifully. It was an unforgettable listening experience and one of those records that effortlessly pulled you into its groove from the very first note.

L3bby - Waiting for a rush (20 May 2026)

“The only person who ever stays on the train is the conductor”. A bar I can never forget and further refining a sound that I still haven't heard anyone else come close to replicating, L3bby once again proved why he occupies a lane entirely of his own. His signature high-pitched cadence floated perfectly over a soft, melancholic instrumental, with delicate guitar melodies complementing his introspective reflections on how life has slowed down and changed. There was an unmistakable identity to everything L3bby create - one that was instantly recognisable and impossible to imitate. To this day, he remains one of the few artists whose music feels genuinely singular, and that ability to carve out a sound so uniquely his own continues to be one of the most fascinating things happening in the independent music scene.

Mars Baby - The Ceremony (29 May 2026)

Mars Baby has always been an artist to turn to for heartfelt, alluring music, and this latest dual-pack release was yet another reminder of his remarkable artistry. The gifted virtuoso delivered two captivating performances, pouring every ounce of emotion into each track as he effortlessly glided across lush, beautifully crafted instrumentals (especially on the track “I’ll Wait”). Through rich storytelling and sincere lyricism, Mars Baby transformed his love story into an immersive sonic experience that was as intimate as it was unforgettable.

Mbali Rose - Khaya Lami (10 July 2026)

A beautiful ballad that likened love to the feeling of coming home, Mbali delivered an incredibly intimate and heartfelt performance. She masterfully captured the tenderness of the song, allowing every emotion to breathe through her captivating vocals. The gentle piano melodies wrapped delicately around her voice, creating a warm, enchanting atmosphere as she poured her heart into this magical ode to love. An exceptional tune from an exceptional rising talent!

MeccaMind - Monate So (17 July 2026)

MeccaMind has an undeniable gift for filling a room with infectious energy, pairing groove-laden production with performances that demand your attention from the very first note. This latest release remained true to that winning formula, driven by bouncy basslines and irresistible rhythms that pulsed with life. His hypnotic delivery effortlessly pulled listeners into his world, further cementing the distinctive sound he has continued to champion and make his own within South Africa's music landscape.

Melonin x Reneilwe - Tonight (12 July 2026)

As my first introduction to Melonin's music, I was immediately captivated by the seductive charm of her performance. Gliding effortlessly across the TrapSoul-inspired production, she showcased the remarkable versatility of her vocals, adapting seamlessly to the track's smooth and atmospheric soundscape. Reneilwe, meanwhile, did what she does best, elevating the record with a stunning guest appearance that complemented Melonin's performance beautifully and made for an unforgettable collaboration.

Mia Lord - Car Park Cult (22 May 2026)

A beautifully written track exploring Mia's feelings of being lost in a world weighed down by uncertainty, troubles, and anxiety, this release was both emotionally resonant and captivating. Her vocal performance was nothing short of outstanding, carrying each lyric with sincerity and conviction while her exceptional storytelling painted a vivid picture of her experiences. Backed by a charming instrumental that kept me completely entranced from beginning to end, the song built towards an exhilarating climax, where the introduction of heavier rock elements injected a powerful surge of emotion and intensity.

MORI - Big Baby (27 July 2026)

Short yet deeply affecting, MORI used this release as a space to lay bare his thoughts and emotions with striking sincerity. Set against a euphoric instrumental adorned with soaring horns, the track created an uplifting atmosphere that beautifully contrasted the weight of his reflections. As he unpacked the realities of navigating the world around him, MORI delivered a performance that felt both vulnerable and captivating, leaving a lasting impression despite the song's brief runtime.

MvRk x AUDIBLE KNWLDG. - The Things We KNW. (31 July 2026)

Listening to MvRK's production is always a rewarding experience, and this latest release was no exception. Joining forces with the immensely talented poet, AUDIBLE KNWLDG, the duo crafted a compelling collection of Hip Hop cuts rich with exceptional performances, masterful sampling, and beautifully layered instrumentals. Mxchael Blue - final ode to LOVE (7 July 2026)

A four-track body of work that unpacked Blue's reflections on love and intimacy, this project felt like a refreshing stylistic evolution from the vocalist. His renowned vocal ability was given the freedom to explore a collection of unique and captivating instrumentals, with "FLY" standing out as a particular highlight. Over Oro waAfrika's eerie, off-kilter neo-soul production, Blue's vocals glided effortlessly, creating one of the project's most memorable moments. Sensual, immersive, and beautifully crafted, this was a stunning offering from one of the scene's rising talents.

Myza - One Man Show (17 July 2025)

Now this is exactly the kind of Amapiano I love. The Durban native showcased just how smooth and elegant his production can be, crafting a beautifully understated soundscape that felt effortlessly magical. This was the perfect soundtrack for long drives through the city, with warm piano melodies complementing his charming vocal performance at every turn. Simple yet captivating, this was a release that remained engaging from start to finish.

Njebo Selah - Gone With The Wind, Demos (28 June 2026)

Njebo Selah is an artist I've consistently seen putting in the work to make his name known, and it's easy to see why. Despite being presented as a demo tape, this project never felt like a collection of throwaway ideas. Instead, it offered a compelling glimpse into his artistry and the direction he's carving out for himself. "AWAY FROM HOME" stood out as a defining moment, perfectly encapsulating the introspective, poetic sound that makes his music so captivating. Across these ten tracks, Njebo Selah proved himself to be a true wordsmith, delivering thoughtful lyricism and heartfelt storytelling that left a lasting impression. If this was only a demo, his future looks incredibly promising.

Nothando Mamba - 500 Days of Summer (14 May 2026)

Another exciting new name to land on VERVE's radar, Mamba made an unforgettable first impression with this stunning two-track release. Both songs were beautifully crafted, but "500 Days of Summer" stood out in particular, showcasing the sheer power and emotion of her voice. Meanwhile, "Better as a Memory" highlighted her versatility and exceptional ability as a vocalist, proving that she has the talent to command a listener's attention with ease. Discovering artists of this calibre is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do at VERVE, and Mamba is yet another reminder of the incredible talent waiting to be uncovered.

omgeskay - trained ears only (12 June 2026)

Further expanding his range within South Africa's underground trap scene, Omgeskay goes all out on this thrilling release, showcasing both his versatility as a rapper and his growth as a producer. Tracks like "PTA" and "there4u" (featuring Euan) stood out as personal favourites, pairing smooth, atmospheric instrumentals with booming 808s that kept my head nodding from start to finish.

Operation Khataza - Mantra (25 June 2026)

This was one of the releases I had been anticipating the most. The rising Cape Town Afro-Rock collective delivered a beautifully performed single that tackled important social and racial themes through a powerful and emotionally charged performance. One of the standout moments came from Fabian, whose commanding and impassioned verse left a lasting impression, adding another layer of intensity to an already amazing record. Altogether, this was a captivating listening experience that further showcased the band's ability to pair meaningful songwriting with exceptional musicianship.

Orah & The Kites - Ember (M31-2014-Ds1) (19 June 2026)

A beautifully performed offering from the Cape Town alternative band, this track saw Ntokozo lay bare her innermost thoughts and emotions as she navigated the heartache of a hopeless romantic situation, searching for any way to escape the pain. I was captivated by the song's melancholic atmosphere, with its gentle, wandering instrumentation creating the perfect backdrop for a truly sensational vocal performance. The result was a heavenly piece of music that lingered long after the final note.

Oro WaAfrika - (25 July 2026)

When it comes to crafting beats that captivate with their dark, distorted textures and inventive sampling, Oro WaAfrika is in a league of his own. This latest release served as a brilliant showcase of his smooth yet mystifying production style, with every instrumental carrying a distinct atmosphere that pulled listeners deeper into its world. What made the project even more compelling is how seamlessly each collaborator rose to the occasion, delivering memorable verses that complemented Oro's vision. Artists like BABA KUSHI, Kijana Damu, and the rest of the featured guests effortlessly merged well with his dope production, resulting in a cohesive and immersive Hip Hop experience that highlighted the rap gifts of everyone involved.

Oxii Moron x Lotus Thusi - RIGHT HERE (11 June 2026)

Oxii Moron has long been one of the R&B artists I've been urging more people to discover, thanks to his remarkable blend of soulful vocal performances and heartfelt storytelling. This release was a perfect example of why, as Moron unpacked the complexities of love with warmth, vulnerability, and a touch of whimsy. It also served as my introduction to the exceptional Lotus Thusi, whose stunning vocal range immediately left a lasting impression and beautifully complemented the chemistry of this song.

passionfruitdilla x Gusto x Alto - Playing the Scene (5 June 2026)

What a bubbly and vibrant offering from this energetic trio. From the very first note, they created an irresistibly groovy atmosphere, effortlessly bouncing off one another as they rapped and sang about the ups and downs of love. Their chemistry was infectious, making every performance feel natural and full of personality. What made this track especially memorable was its vibrant energy - it's the kind of song that made it almost impossible not to get up and dance.

Petrol Station Pies - Bela Lugosi (1 May 2026)

A fiery offering from the Cape Town rock band, this release was an exhilarating ride from start to finish. Raging guitar riffs collided with thunderous drums to create an explosive sonic landscape, while the band's lead singer commanded every moment with his alluring and emotionally charged vocal performance. I especially loved the tempo shift towards the closing moments, which heightened the song's intensity and mirrored the pounding heartbeat it inspired throughout the listening experience.

Pixie Whip - DREAM, BABY, DREAM (26 June 2026)

Filled with positivity and encouragement, Pixie Whip used this gentle, heartfelt track to remind listeners of the importance of persevering through life's challenges, championing the idea that we should all learn to be our own biggest cheerleaders. As uplifting as the message is, it was matched beautifully by her captivating performance, with the talented songbird's stunning vocals effortlessly drawing listeners into the warmth and sincerity of this lovely tune.

Plggry x Makwil x Bvse - Blue Wrld Outro (6 June 2026)

There's something truly enchanting about this record. Makwil's soothing yet introspective poetry glided effortlessly over Plggry's heavenly production, where the warm presence of a saxophone filled the space with a rich, soulful atmosphere. Bvse added another compelling dimension, delivering an emotionally charged performance as he unpacked the pain and weight of his experiences. As calming as the track was, it was equally captivating, with Plggry's beautifully layered production providing the perfect foundation for both artists to shine.

Prodbykobain - Memoir: After the Chaos. (31 July 2026)

What impressed me most about this five-track release was how every song carved out its own distinct identity. kobain showcased remarkable versatility as a producer, effortlessly shifting from the playful, upbeat bounce of "Girlslovebeyonce" to the dreamy, wave-like production of "Comeback2Me:)", which served as the perfect backdrop for Mxchael Blue's outstanding performance. The project's unpredictability made it all the more rewarding, with each track offering something fresh to discover. By the time the final song faded out, it was clear that Kobain had earned a brand-new fan at VERVE.

Pumas+Roses - Noir On Both Sides (26 June 2026)

Pumas is on a truly remarkable run right now. Not long after delivering the exceptional “SLAYTHETUNDRA!”, he returned with yet another standout body of work that further cemented his place among South Africa's most exciting lyricists. Every element of this project landed with purpose - from the commanding performances and immaculate production to the carefully chosen features and immersive atmosphere. This was a cohesive, confident release that stood as one of the finest South African projects of the year so far.

pxshboy - The End (29 May 2026)

A heartfelt heartbreak ballad, this release found pxshboy reflecting on the cherished moments he shared with a lover he's recently lost. This was an emotionally vulnerable performance, as he laid bare his grief while holding onto the hope that their paths may one day cross again. Deeply personal and undeniably poignant, the song was elevated by pxshboy's sincere vocal delivery and the soothing guitar riffs that gently carried its emotional weight from beginning to end.

Remo x tylerwrldwide - Almost Yours (8 May 2026)

This was my first time experiencing the sounds of Remo, and the rising songbird immediately left a lasting impression with this 5-track EP. Her smooth, captivating vocal range glided effortlessly over the sensual R&B production crafted by the talented tylerwrldwide, resulting in a project that felt both intimate and immersive. Standout tracks like "Quite Frankly" and "Without" beautifully showcased her artistry, while the instrumental expertise of Keyywav and SundaeBeats added further depth and richness to the listening experience.

reneilwe - Be mine (31 July 2026)

Captivating listeners as she always does, Reneilwe once again proved why she is one of the most exciting voices in R&B. On this alluring release, she painted a vivid portrait of the emotional turmoil that comes with loving someone who continually occupies her thoughts, yearning for them to be hers and hers alone. Her vocal performance was nothing short of stunning, gliding effortlessly over a dark, melancholic instrumental, produced by BakerGotTheKeys, that perfectly mirrored the song's emotional weight. Together, the haunting production and Reneilwe's heartfelt delivery created an atmosphere that was both intimate and deeply affecting.

Rey Jade - Unyanakamsangano the protege (8 May 2026)

Xhosa rap has another gem on its hands. This project came highly recommended by a friend, and I'm grateful I took the time to experience it. From start to finish, this was an exhilarating listen, pairing fiery lyricism with thunderous Trap production that demanded your attention. Tracks like "Amagumba" featuring Greyhlobani and Yxng Miller, along with "Sazo Lendar" featuring Risky T RSA, stood out as explosive highlights, perfectly capturing the project's infectious energy and uncompromising spirit.

Roccodom - Energies Never Lie (27 May 2026)

An infectious body of work from a rising sensation, this seven-track offering was packed with fresh ideas and adventurous sonic choices. What impressed me most was Roccodom's versatility as an artist, effortlessly showcasing the breadth of his vocal ability while moving between genres with confidence. Whether leaning into Afropop melodies or seamlessly transitioning onto hard-hitting underground Trap production, he made every stylistic shift feel natural, resulting in a project that was both exciting and rewarding to experience.

Sakhile x INKINGA YOMHLABA x TJ ZULU - KWASUKASUKELA (31 July 2026)

Quite possibly one of my favourite projects to emerge in 2026, this unexpected collaboration between these three exceptional artists exceeded all of my expectations. Together, they pushed the boundaries of AfroSoul with confidence, crafting a body of art that felt both refreshing and deeply rooted in the genre's emotional core. Every contributor delivered a memorable performance, soaring over heavenly instrumentals that were rich in texture and feeling, making the project impossible to look away from start to finish. Standout tracks such as "INHLIZIYO" and "LALELA" perfectly captured the chemistry and artistry that made this release one of the year's finest.

Scarface Panda - Home (19 June 2026)

Scarface Panda continues to impress the VERVE family with his exceptional production abilities, and this latest release was yet another reminder of his remarkable artistry. Over a hypnotic, chopped-up instrumental, Panda delivered an emotionally gripping performance as he pleads for a lost lover to return home, balancing vulnerability with an charming melodic touch. He's been enjoying an incredible run this year, and if this release is anything to go by, we're excited to see how he continues to build on an already sensational streak.

Shingie-Lee - MVII: YOUNG LEE (the mixtape) (27 May 2026)

This project from North West's finest was easily the rapper's strongest body of work to date. What I loved most about this 15-track offering was its unpredictability. Every song introduced a fresh sonic palette and distinct identity, yet the project never lost the cohesive atmosphere that allowed Lee to showcase his versatility and lyrical prowess. Standout cuts like "YOUNG LEE (DEMO)" and "UNIQUE'S BROTHERS CYPHER" were definite highlights, capturing everything that made this release such an exciting listen.

Sunset Avenu3 x Reneilwe - U (20 June 2026)

Sunset Avenu3 is an exciting recent discovery I've made, and this collaboration with the gifted Reneilwe was an instant standout. Reneilwe set the tone beautifully with a captivating opening verse, while the bass-heavy Trap-Soul production created the perfect atmosphere for Sunset Avenu3 to deliver an engaging and charismatic rap performance. The chemistry between the two artists was undeniable, resulting in a track that kept me completely immersed from beginning to end.

Tannarx - CELESTIAL 3 (7 May 2026)

Making an imposing statement with “CELESTIAL 3”, Tannarx showcased his trapping prowess across a relentless selection of booming Trap instrumentals that hit with unapologetic force. Throughout the tape, the rapper reflected on his journey through the fiercely competitive rap landscape, delivering his ambitions and experiences with unwavering confidence as he sets his sights on the top. Packed with hard-hitting production, commanding performances, and all the hallmarks of standout Trap music, “CELESTIAL 3” was an exhilarating listen from start to finish.

Teagan - everyone and me (5 June 2026)

Filled with love, warmth, and a sense of wonder, Teagan's five-track EP saw her take a refreshing step away from her familiar Pop sound, embracing Country-inspired influences with remarkable ease. The stylistic shift proved to be a natural fit, allowing her stunning vocals to shine over beautifully crafted guitar-driven instrumentals that radiated charm and sincerity. The project wa an absolute joy to experience, with "no sugar in my tea" standing out as my personal favourite thanks to its irresistible atmosphere and heartfelt performance.

togu - The 4th (4 May 2026)

Continuing to build momentum around his name, Togu delivered a fantastic seven-track project that invited listeners into his world. Through enchanting lyricism and introspective storytelling, he unpacked the emotions and experiences that shape his everyday life, giving the project a deeply personal touch. That honesty was evident from the opening moments of "SENSELESS: HEY, YOU" a captivating introduction that immediately set the tone for what unfolded as a thoughtful, immersive, and beautifully crafted body of work from the young virtuoso.

TXRYNIRVANA - SiPHO (19 June 2026)

A beautifully executed project rooted in sadness, honesty, and healing, this deeply personal offering from the immensely gifted TXRYNIRVANA left a lasting impression from beginning to end. I had no idea what to expect going into this release, but by the time it reached its closing moments, I was left in complete awe. The amount of heart and soul poured into every performance was undeniable, with each track feeling raw, sincere, and emotionally resonant. This was a body of work that showcased TXRYNIRVANA's remarkable artistry, and it's safe to say he's gained a new fan in me. Outstanding work.

Veronicaa x Door 55 - Love U Down (27 June 2026)

A groovy, soul-infused listening experience, the track found the talented songbird expressing her unwavering love for another, celebrating both the physical and emotional qualities she cherishes most. Veronicaa's performance was effortlessly charming, gliding across the upbeat instrumental with warmth and sincerity. Door 55's cameo appearance was equally enjoyable, adding a layer of charisma as he delivered his romantic verses with confidence, ease, and composure.

VICEQUIAT. - TELEVISED (11 July 2026)

Welcome to THE BASQUIAT SHOW. This eccentric offering from the Johannesburg-based poet was a gripping exploration of VICE's battles with his past and anxieties about the future, peeling back the dark thoughts that occupy his mind as though he were watching his own life unfold on a television screen. The production throughout the project was exceptional, with each beat perfectly complementing the album's unsettling yet captivating atmosphere. VICE delivered some outstanding rap performances, while standout appearances from his Stayhomme affiliates - Pumas+Roses, Shoka Sunflower, LLELLO, and Kenn Kyoto -added even more depth and personality to an already remarkable body of work.

Vriety x 500. - 100.v (4 May 2026)

A smooth and heavenly collaboration from two exceptionally gifted instrumentalists, this release was filled with luminous sounds that effortlessly drew you into a trance. Every layer of the production felt soothing and meticulously crafted, creating an immersive listening experience. Both Vriety and 500. are no strangers to the VERVE family, having consistently demonstrated their talent for crafting beautifully atmospheric music, and this release was yet another reminder of why they remain among the finest at creating serene, emotionally rich soundscapes.

vuyo viwe - Geza (22 May 2026)

I had an absolute blast experiencing the sheer elegance of this release from vuyo viwe. Her vocals danced effortlessly across the subtle jazz arrangements, weaving beautifully around the delicate piano keys and the warm resonance of the trombone. Every musical element felt thoughtfully placed, coming together with remarkable cohesion to create a performance that was both graceful and captivating. This was a wonderfully executed record that stands as one of the finest jazz releases I've heard throughout 2026.

WAVEE - J.O.Y (2 June 2026)

This two-track release saw the talented producer WAVEE join forces with Emenii on "Distance" and J'dene on "This Ain't Love" resulting in a pair of beautifully crafted Neo-Soul offerings. Both records were a delight to experience, with WAVEE's rich, understated production providing the perfect foundation for each artist's heavenly vocal performance to flourish. His ability to create emotionally resonant sounds continues to impress, further cementing his gift for producing within the Neo-Soul space. If these collaborations are any indication, I'm excited to see how far he can take his sound alongside more artists in the genre.

ZRi x Prod By Esco - Side C : 003 (3 July 2026)

Further pushing the boundaries of his already distinctive sound, ZRi once again proved that few artists can create music quite like he does with this 3-track release. Through his extravagant vocal abilities and Esco's pristine production, the pair crafted a heavenly sonic experience that felt both immersive and otherworldly. Esco's longtime creative partnership with ZRi continued to shine throughout the record, and it's easy to understand why the two virtuosos have remained side by side for so long - the chemistry between them consistently results in phenomenal music.
