The VERVE RoundUp VOL. 8
Yessir! It’s that time of the year again when we spotlight the standout sounds emerging from the South African diaspora, spanning the end of February through to early May 2026.
The music continues to evolve in exciting ways, with artists pushing boundaries and delivering some of the most compelling bodies of work we’ve heard yet. Along the way, we’ve also discovered a new wave of talented musicians and collectives alike, each bringing something fresh, authentic, and undeniably powerful to the scene.
Abba’s Child x Sakhile x INKINGA YOMHLABA - SATURDAY (24 February 2026)
A smooth tune that was filled with a high level of grooviness, Abba’s latest release delivered on every level. His vocals on the infectious hook were absolutely beautiful to experience as he expressed his urges about wanting to get closer to a special someone without any competition, especially on a Saturday. Sakhile’s verse was a standout moment as her heavenly vocals glided across the track with a soft, captivating ease, while INKINGA YOMHLABA closed things off with a rich, soulful final verse that added depth and texture to this tune. Abba had a quiet 2025, releasing only two tracks from my knowledge, so hopefully we get to see more from him this year, maybe even an album.
Akeeda - Expiry (24 April 2026)
The Capetonian folk sensation once again delivered a breathtaking performance with this ballad. This release had Akeeda lean fully into vulnerability, opening up about the emotional complexities of love while grappling with anxiety, and the difficult process of letting go in order to grow into a better version of oneself. The instrumentation was just as stunning, having delicate guitar notes shimmer beneath the vocal performance. This was a beautifully layered record that left a lasting impression on me.
Babble Hume - SHAKE’A (17 April 2026)
I had a good feeling this track would be banger from the moment I hit play and once I did the warm, peach-toned guitar lines pulled me in instantly, setting the mood before the loud drums kicked in and gave this release its pulse. What really caught me off guard, though, was just how infectious the song became as the band delivered a hook that felt effortlessly catchy and bound to have any audience shaking their bodies. This track definitely stands out as one of my favourite releases of the year so far, and it’s the kind of track that never loses its charm, no matter how many times I have it on repeat.
Big Body Bones - Do It Already (10 April 2026)
Big Body Bones went all out on this eight-track offering, delivering a project that felt both raw and deliberate. The Capetonian lyricist’s signature grit was on full display, having his rugged tone cut through each track with so much conviction. What made this release particularly engaging was its experimental production filled with warped sounds that echoed behind his bars, giving the project a distinct and unpredictable sound especially on the tracks “Don’t Think About It” and “9 Times Outta 10”.
Bipolarr - Beexdol (17 April 2026)
The Cape Town Underground Trap scene is honestly impossible to ignore right now. The Mother City is brimming with pockets of rising talent, and Bipolarr is undoubtedly one to watch, especially off the back of this explosive release. The intensity on this track hit immediately, sounding loud, unfiltered, and unapologetic. Over booming production (done by bxngzy), he vented with conviction, touching on everything from fake friendships and unpaid dues to choosing solitude over unnecessary drama. This release refused to hold your hand having raw and overwhelming sounds that might not be for the faint-hearted. For those willing to lean into its chaos, it’s an electrifying listen from start to finish.
BRADLEY - PAPERS (10 April 2026)
You can clearly hear the influence of Dominic Fike in BRADLEY’s engaging sound. On this Indie-Pop offering, the Cape Town–born artist unpacked his frustrations of being caught in a cycle of empty promises, constantly signing deal after deal that ultimately leads nowhere. It’s a struggle many can relate to, and he captured it with an honesty that resonates with many. Paired with his alluring vocal delivery and a vibrant, feel-good instrumental, the track striked a balance between introspection and easy listenability, making it both relatable and replay-worthy. I look forward to more releases from this bright Capetonian prospect.
Cardo Gobain - Madiba Mode (22 April 2026)
It’s been a minute since Cardo’s last project, “Wait No Longer”, dropped way back in 2024, however, the rap talent made a commanding return with this gripping release. After a lengthy hiatus, he stepped back into the spotlight with purpose, showcasing how he’s more sharpened, focused, and clearly ready to remind listeners exactly what he’s capable of. The track carried a magnetic intensity, driven by rich, layered production that had delicate sample sound wander above booming 808s, creating both hard-hitting and refined sound. Cardo sounds locked in and this was a strong comeback that reasserted his presence in the game.
Carlo Franco - A Funeral for My Grief (24 April 2026)
What a stunning body of work from the Capetonian songbird. This release felt deeply intimate, as she invited listeners into her world - navigating both the highs and lows of her journey with striking vulnerability. It’s a project that leaned into honesty, offering a heartfelt exploration of emotion and experience. Her vocal performances were nothing short of captivating throughout. In particular, “My Love” stood out as a defining moment, showcasing the full depth and power of her abilities. Dwabzi’s stock continues to rise, and it’s been exciting witnessing his steady ascent in the music world. On this three-track EP, I could notice a shift in his sound, having a stronger emphasis on punchy drums and crisp snares driving the production beneath his signature, captivating delivery. I especially noticed this on the track “Hold That” having the percussive energy stand out, giving the track a weight and intensity that made you immediately imagine how powerful it would feel in a live setting. It’s always refreshing to see Capetonian talent experimenting and evolving, and this subtle sonic pivot from Dwabzi added an intriguing new layer to his sound. I’m fully on board with this direction and I’m super keen to see where he takes it next.
D3NZL - Orange Sunsets (6 March 2026)
What a special talent, man. D3NZL’s sound is consistently a pleasure to experience, and this latest release was no exception. This track unfolded over a smooth, soulful, jazz-infused instrumental that immediately drew me in. It’s the kind of production that naturally made me wonder which artist would be the perfect fit over it - until I realised none were needed. The instrumental stands entirely on its own, which is a testament to the strength of D3NZL’s production and his ear for atmosphere and detail. This was one of those records that didn’t demand anything from the listener except presence. Perfect for sunset drives along the coast, where the music and the moment can breathe together in harmony.

The production leaned into an energetic Pop-Rock blend, creating a vibrant and uplifting sonic backdrop. Driving instrumentals gave the track its momentum, while her angelic vocals soared effortlessly above it all, tying emotion and energy together beautifully. This was an inspiring, feel-good record and one that felt both celebratory and grounding, making it a genuine vibe from start to finish.
Espacio Dios - I’m not a rapper (24 April 2026)
I’ve been a long-time fan of Espacio’s discography, going all the way back to the “Son of Uri” era. He’s always stood out as a deeply versatile artist, with a reputation built largely on his vocal ability and singing talent. This release, however, saw him stepping into a different pocket entirely. The multi-talented artist tapped into his rap side, showcasing sharp poetic delivery over a range of Hip Hop instrumentals that had me entertained. This was a refreshing pivot that highlighted a different take on his sound while still feeling true to his creative identity. For me, tracks like “Industry Freestyle” and “What It Takes” stood out in particular, with both cuts carrying a raw energy that had me nodding along from start to finish. It’s always exciting to see an artist stretch their range like this, and Espacio did so with so much confidence and intent.
Eva Marie - IT GIRL (24 April 2026)
The young pop princess delivered a standout gem with this release. Eva glided effortlessly over this pulsating Electro-Pop backdrop, having her vocals shimmering with confidence and control. The production was also immersive, placing you right in the middle of what felt like a dimly lit dancefloor, lost in the rhythm as the night slowly faded away. There’s a certain magic to tunes like this, where energy and atmosphere meet seamlessly, and Eva captured it beautifully. Her vocal performance was both striking and fluid, blending perfectly with the hypnotic beat that created a track that felt as captivating as it is replay-worthy.

This was my first time stepping into Faizell’s world, and it left a lasting impression. He really opened the door to his inner thoughts, inviting listeners into a deeply personal space shaped by his everyday experiences, touching on love, purpose, and the weight of navigating a difficult life. There was a raw emotional core running through this project that made it feel honest and unfiltered. “MIND” stood out in particular, capturing a sense of inner conflict and uncertainty that added depth to his storytelling. Sonically, the album was just as compelling, having a blend of somber soul and hip hop forming the foundation, giving Faizell the space to move seamlessly between rapping and singing. This was a well-rounded, introspective body of work that showcased both his versatility and his ability to connect on a deeper level. I’ll definitely be keeping a closer eye on more work from Faizell.

The production was beautifully crafted, creating the perfect atmosphere for each artist to leave their mark in their own unique way. The additions of LLELLO, Colourful.Melancholy, Wolffisdead, and Ngwedi elevated the track even further, with every feature bringing a distinct energy and talent that blended seamlessly into the song’s dreamy soundscape.
Tymicah x Salie Sousa - possesion (10 April 2026)
A track tailor-made for the R&B lovers, Tymicah delivered a seductive and emotionally rich performance on this stunning single. With effortless vulnerability, the songbird laid bare her deepest emotions over a heavenly instrumental layered with booming 808s, produced b Salie Sousa, that added both weight and intensity to the track’s dreamy atmosphere. What made the song so captivating was the balance between its emotional depth and its hypnotic sound, allowing Tymicah’s voice to completely pull listeners into her world. From the smooth production to her mesmerizing delivery, every element of this track came together beautifully — and for me, it was absolutely everything.
VAPI x wavonthekeys - Sade Adu (31 March 2026)
I’m really enjoying the new direction VAPI has been taking with his sound lately. On this release, the Capetonian rapper attacked an exhilarating Trap instrumental with explosive energy, delivering sharp and energetic bars over booming production that completely filled the space around you. What made this track so exciting is how different it felt compared to the sound he explored on his 2025 project, “Hiatus Was Never The Plan”. Rather than staying within familiar territory, VAPI seems more willing than ever to push beyond his comfort zone and experiment with new styles, and the result was an absolute banger. It’s refreshing to hear an artist evolve so confidently while still keeping the charisma and intensity that made listeners gravitate toward him in the first place.
zannix - Lie2me (6 April 2026)
This track from underground sensation Zannix was an absolute thrill to experience from start to finish. The moment that infectious hook kicked in, it became impossible to get out of my head, especially with those booming 808s crashing through the instrumental and giving the song such a hard-hitting presence. While the underground Trap scene continues to grow with more artists stepping forward and showcasing their sound, there’s something about Zannix that keeps pulling me back in. His energy, delivery, and ability to craft such addictive tracks make him stand out in a space that’s becoming increasingly crowded, and this release only solidified why he’s one of the more exciting names to keep an eye on.
Zenith Oleander x xxshxdowxrmy - The Preamble (13 April 2026)
A truly astonishing project that completely caught me off guard, Zenith proved himself to be one of the most exciting emerging talents I’ve come across in a while. Across this four-track EP, he showcased impeccable storytelling abilities, with vivid lyricism, emotional depth, and an authenticity that made every moment feel meaningful. Everything about the project felt carefully crafted to perfection. The production by xxshxdowxrmy was phenomenal, providing soulful and immersive backdrops for Zenith’s top-tier rap performances, while the stories woven throughout the tape carried so much heart and personality. Every track felt purposeful, making the EP one of my personal favourites so far. This was my first introduction to Zenith’s artistry, but after hearing a release this strong, he’s absolutely gained a new fan in me.
11Flows - The Monologue Collection 1 (10 April 2026)
Flexing his lyrical prowess across this twelve-track album, 11Flows delivered a captivating performance that powerfully showcased his hunger, ambition, and dedication to his craft. Throughout the project, his bars landed with confidence and intensity, cutting through an array of inspiring Hip Hop instrumentals that kept the listening experience engaging from start to finish. What stood out most was how naturally he balanced sharp lyricism with raw passion, making every verse feel purposeful and driven. The production provided the perfect atmosphere for his energetic delivery, creating an immersive environment that had me completely entranced by just how dope and cohesive everything sounded.
